Center imposes up to 10 years in prison and 1 crore fine

The Center has enacted a strict law that aims to tackle malpractices and irregularities in competitive exams. The law provides for a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 1 crore for violators.

In a gazette notice, the Personnel Ministry said the provisions of the law would come into force today. The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Bill, 2024 was passed by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on February 6 and 9 respectively. President Droupadi Murmu approved the bill on February 12, turning it into law.

The Act aims to prevent unfair practices in public examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, Staff Selection Commission, National Testing Agency, Railway Recruitment Board and agencies examination for recruitment in the banking sector, among others.

It includes provisions for a minimum of three to five years of imprisonment to combat cheating, and those involved in organized cheating crimes will be liable to five to 10 years of imprisonment and a minimum fine of 1 crore of rupees.
