BBC forced to apologize to ‘shocked’ Gabby Logan after Hungary knock Scotland out of Euro 2024

BBC forced to apologize to ‘shocked’ Gabby Logan after Hungary knock Scotland out of Euro 2024

The BBC was forced to apologize after broadcasting a replay of the incident which saw Barnabas Varga sent off in Hungary’s 1-0 win over Scotland at Euro 2024 on Sunday evening.

The 29-year-old was forced to leave the clash after colliding with Angus Gunn, who was trying to recover the ball.

Varga spent several minutes on the field receiving treatment, with the Hungarian players visibly in distress.

They formed a protective barrier around their teammate, who was then laid out on a stretcher by medics with a huge sheet erected to preserve his privacy.

The BBC was forced to apologize after broadcasting a replay of the incident which saw Barnabas Varga sent off in Hungary’s 1-0 win over Scotland at Euro 2024 on Sunday evening.

The BBC showed a replay of the incident, with Varga said to be in a “stable” and “conscious” condition.

The broadcaster, along with ITV, uses UEFA’s global feed to show tournament matches, meaning they cannot necessarily control what fans are exposed to.

After the incident was replaced, the British television screens cut back to a wide-angle shot while Varga received treatment.

And Logan has now apologized and revealed she was “shocked” after UEFA chose to broadcast the footage to millions of people around the world.

“We were as shocked as you were when they replayed this incident,” she said.

“There are protocols around this sort of thing after Christian Eriksen three years ago and we were very surprised that UEFA decided to show this replay, which is why we immediately cut to a wide angle as soon as possible.”

Hungarian coach Marco Rossi says Varga will not play another minute at Euro 2024.

They were seconds away from exiting the competition before Kevin Csoboth’s late winner, but are now all but through to the knockout stages.

Rossi said: “Barnabas Varga’s life is not in danger.

“He will undergo surgery after a facial fracture and will not be available for the remainder of Euro 2024.”

Although it was a huge night for Hungary, it was a devastating night for Scotland.

They performed well in the clash but ultimately paid the price for a lack of avant-garde.

And Scotland defender Scott McKenna, speaking to the BBC, admitted the mood in the dressing room was flat following their elimination from the competition.

“We are extremely disappointed. I have no way to describe the feeling in the locker room,” he said.

“We came here wanting to win the game and try to do something no Scottish team has done before, but that wasn’t the case.

“It’s a fantastic team to be part of. It’s been a brilliant experience but just a bit of frustration we haven’t been able to go any further.

“Not just the fans in the stadium, but also thousands of people who came out of the stadium, even those who didn’t go to Germany. They all supported us massively.

“We hope they enjoyed it, we’re just disappointed we couldn’t go further for them.

“It will take a few weeks, maybe even months, but this is a group of players that can pick themselves up and hopefully qualify for other tournaments in the future.”

“Proud of this group of players and the management. We put everything into this tournament.

“It’s going to be something that we remember and be proud of. We obviously didn’t make it and that’s hard to accept, but we’re going to get back up.

“I would just like to say to all the supporters who came, to all those who watched at home, who supported us until the end, family and friends, we are gutted for you.
