By day, he is known for selling yam tubers, while always wearing a friendly smile. In the evening, he takes his books to the school hall to study.

Accra Technical University student Elisha Nayo struggles on the streets of Accra to make ends meet and pursue his dream of becoming a chartered accountant.

In an interview with Victoria Kyei Baffour of GhanaWeb on the Everyday People program, Elisha shared that he always wanted to become an accountant since his childhood.

However, financial difficulties threatened this dream.

Despite this, Elisha did not let life’s challenges dash her aspirations, venturing into a business that her parents once ran.

Through this, he started selling yam tubers and for the past seven years he has been known as a yam seller.

It was through this experience and after saving some money that he decided to get admitted to college to pursue his personal dream.

“I have been selling yams for seven years. Once I finished my studies, I looked for work but couldn’t find any. So I decided to join my parents in their yam selling business. My dream has always been to become an accountant. As time passed and I saved money, I realized I couldn’t waste it. I knew I had to continue my studies to become a better person in the future, which is why I decided to go back to school,” he told Twi.

Elisha also shared some experiences from her time at the school.

He said that due to his financial situation, there were days when he felt overwhelmed by the lifestyle of some students from affluent backgrounds.

Despite this, Elisha said he remains focused on his goals.

“Sometimes when you meet high-ranking people you realize that their lifestyle is different from yours, but you also learn how to manage your life in such situations. It was a little difficult because there were children of rich people, and then there was me, without much money, stuck in between. I noticed that they lived differently, but we focused on education to learn, succeed and ensure a better future,” he told the host.
