Kieran Trippier has called on his Three Lions teammates to “show more desire” in their Group C final against Slovenia.

England have already booked their place in the last 16, but a critical eye will be placed on the final group stage match in Cologne. Gareth Southgate’s side have been heavily scrutinized since their 1-1 draw against Denmark and their unconvincing 1-0 opener against Serbia.

Indeed, Gary Lineker called the display “s***” on his podcast “The Rest is Football”, prompting strong responses from England skipper Harry Kane and midfielder Declan Rice in defense of the displays .

And Trippier launched into the rant, saying that ahead of Tuesday night’s game the conversation within the England camp had been both optimistic and realistic.

“We know we have to improve, individually and as a group,” Trippier told ITV before kick-off. “Tonight we talked at length about the need to perform. We want to be first in the group, that’s the most important thing and I hope it will be tonight.”

When asked what the mood was like within the camp amid the constant attention from media and fans, the 33-year-old replied: “Positivity. There are so many things we can improve on, we discussed it as a group. We now have the opportunity to finish first in the group and put in a real performance.

“Pressing better. Keeping the ball much better. Getting back to basics is what made us successful. I hope we show that today. We show more desire, more goal threat as well . Above all, keep your clean sheet.”
