NYC Health + Hospitals announced the completion of 20 new wellness rooms where staff can decompress during the workday. The $1 million project, funded primarily by philanthropic funds, was designed by WXY Studio and took two years to complete. The newly renovated lounges feature high-quality furniture, calming lighting elements, artificial plants, aesthetic enhancements such as wall graphics and decals, and works from the health system’s art collection. Wellness Rooms provide a centralized location for wellness programs, where staff can socialize and connect with colleagues, engage in peer support, learn about wellness resources internal and external, participate in well-being events and connect to their own concrete needs. They also provide a space for staff to relax, take a break and recharge before attending to patient care. The Jeffrey H. and Shari L. Aronson Family Foundation made a lead contribution to support the creation of the 20 wellness rooms. Several other donors also contributed to the project, including the Ira W. DeCamp Foundation and the George Link, Jr. Foundation.

“We envision wellness rooms as spaces for social connection, with colorful, natural graphics that aim to nourish and support our essential healthcare workers,” said Julie Torres Moskovitz, director of sustainability at WXY, the architecture firm that designed the new wellness rooms. “This project came to fruition thanks to a wonderful collaboration of so many different voices. The results transform these neutral spaces into art- and nature-filled areas to recharge and relax, and we’re excited to see the project evolve with a life of its own now that the doors are open.
