Upset McCook Lake residents meet with county official

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — Distraught McCook Lake residents and homeowners met with Union County’s emergency manager for the first time after flooding ravaged homes and streets in the area.

According to the homeowners, Wednesday was the first time they met with county officials since the flooding problems began Saturday afternoon. You can see the heated meeting in the photo below.

KELOLAND News was at Northshore Drive Wednesday morning and will have more reaction from homeowners with the McCook Lake Association and the latest developments from area officials.

At a news conference Tuesday, Gov. Kristi Noem said at least “a few dozen homes” were destroyed in McCook Lake.

“McCook Lake ended up taking a heavier load than expected and we saw losses,” Noem said. “That allowed us to protect all of North Sioux City and the industrial park that was there.”

Wednesday morning, engineers discovered air pockets under North Shore Drive and feared the entire street could collapse. All residents near McCook Lake are asked to leave the area. In the meeting with Union County Emergency Director Jason Westcott, Westcott defended the state’s decision to move people from their homes near Lake McCook.

“This North Shore Drive is completely destroyed,” Noem said. “These families are facing a truly tragic situation. »
