Organizers of a ‘Rainbow Disco’ for teenagers in Newtownmountkennedy have canceled the event in Newtownmountkennedy.

The event at the local community center was planned for this Sunday but has now been postponed after warnings it could result in a protest.

In a statement, Councilor Danny Alvey said “The recent protests in Newtownmountkennedy over the accommodation of asylum seekers show that far-right elements intend to infiltrate these groups to sow further hatred and division in this community. Their behavior must be denounced at every opportunity by the vast majority of ordinary, decent residents. of the region.

“Despite the cancellation of this weekend’s teen disco, I will proudly march in this year’s Wicklow Pride parade on July 6 as an ally to our LGBTQ+ community.”
