Canadian Journalism Foundation announces four new board members

TORONTO, June 27, 2024 /CNW/ – The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) is pleased to announce four new members to its board of directors. They are: Toronto Star Queen’s Park Office Manager Robert Benzie; BNN Bloomberg presenter and journalist Amber Kanwar; Erin MillarCEO and Co-Founder, Indiegraf and Terrie Tweddle, Director of Brand and Communications, Rogers Communications. In the meantime, the trustees of the Foundation have appointed Maureen Shaughnessy Kitts, president and director of Shaughnessy Kitts Communications, serving as executive vice president. Angela Pacienza, editor-in-chief at The Globe and Mail And Jeff Elgie, CEO of Village Media, were named co-vice presidents.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome these four distinguished new members to the Board of Directors,” said Andrew WillisChair of the FJC Governance and Nominating Committee. “Each brings considerable experience and deep understanding to advance the Foundation’s mission of promoting excellence in Canadian journalism. Collectively, they provide important leadership to address the evolving challenges of Canada’s media landscape.”

Robert Benzie is responsible for coordinating provincial political coverage for Canada newspaper with the largest circulation. Before joining the Star in 2003 he covered Queen’s Park and Toronto Town hall for National Posta newspaper he helped launch as an associate editor in Toronto in 1998. Before that, he worked for the Toronto Sun and the Ottawa Sun.

Amber Kanwar appears on BNN Bloomberg’s The Open and The Disruptors. Amber is a local product of the BNN Bloomberg newsroom, rising from intern to segment producer and now anchor. His master’s thesis in journalism at Toronto Metropolitan University was an investigative reporting on the fertility industry that broke a national scandal and made the front page of the Globe and Mail. She specializes in the stock market and is constantly looking for stocks that fly under the radar and make emerging trends accessible.

Erin Millar, is a journalist and entrepreneur who founded The Discourse, where she led an award-winning journalism team and developed a successful business model for in-depth local reporting. She also helped found the Independent Media Association of Canada and C4C Canadaa charity dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices.

Former FCJ Board Member Returns After 4-Year Hiatus, Terrie Tweddle is responsible for advancing Rogers’ brand and reputation with key stakeholders, both internally and externally. Prior to joining Rogers, she led communications and corporate social responsibility functions at Visa International, Sun Life Financial and Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan.

New executive vice president Maureen Shaughnessy-Kitts has been a member of the FJC Board of Directors since 2000, most recently serving as Vice President and Chairman of the Awards Ceremony Committee. She is accompanied within the FCJ executive committee by newly appointed vice-presidents. Jeff Elgie And Angela Pacienza.

“Maureen has been a loyal and inspiring member of the FCJ Board of Directors for many years. Throughout my involvement with the Foundation, she has provided me and so many others with constant guidance and mentorship,” said the FCJ Board Chair. Kathy English. “I am thrilled that Maureen will continue to share her wisdom and experience with our board.

“With the addition of Angela Pacienza And Jeff Elgie To our executive committee, I believe the FJC is well-positioned to address the challenges facing Canadian media and advance our mission, including by fostering a better public understanding of the importance of journalism in these difficult times.
