A P-plate driver has collided with two trucks travelling at more than 100km/h after losing control on one of Queensland’s busiest highways.

Drivers traveling northbound on the Bruce Highway were brought to a standstill after the young driver hit two trucks and narrowly avoided another car.

In footage of the crash, a silver Mazda 3 with red P plates was seen swinging into the middle lane and crashing into the front of the first truck.

Moments earlier, the hatchback was filmed driving alongside a silver Subaru, with the driver in front seen slamming on the brakes several times.

“Road rage and brake control led to a major accident this afternoon,” the video captioned the video on the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page.

“Unfortunately, our truck was caught in the middle and one of the parties involved came into contact with our truck.”

In dashcam footage shared online, the Subaru was seen driving in the inside lane with the Mazda hot on its tail before the driver slammed on the brakes.

The two men continued for a short distance before the Subaru accelerated, giving the Mazda driver space to change lanes, before braking sharply.

The incident, between a silver Subaru Outback station wagon and a silver Mazda 3 sedan, was captured on the dash camera of a nearby trucking company vehicle on Wednesday.

After swerving to avoid the vehicle, the Mazda lost control, entered the middle lane and struck the first truck.

The Mazda then bounced into the left lane and collided with the second truck before hitting the barricade next to the inside lane.

The driver of the Subaru left the scene after the damaged Mazda came to a stop with pieces of its hood strewn across the highway.

Police said the driver of the Mazda, a 20-year-old Sunrise Beach man, was not injured.

Australians are divided over which driver is at fault.

“Both drivers need to surrender their licenses! Great footage to show how stupid choices affect innocent people!” one person wrote.

Another added: “The brake checker is in serious trouble with the police for this… it may be illegal to tailgate, but the deliberate actions of the front driver caused two serious incidents, the latter leading to a potentially fatal accident.”

“Checking brakes and tailgating are both stupid things to do,” agreed a third.

A fourth said: “No matter how close someone is… don’t check the brakes, period!”

Others said the Mazda driver’s impatience, always on his P plates, was to blame.

“After the first check, Mazda could have just backed up and parked behind the truck, without acting like a real tool and causing a major accident,” one user said.

A second added: “Subie was overtaking, going almost 70mph and the Mazda was still pretending to be his shadow.”

“Looks like the Subaru was changing lanes to let the angry Mazda pass… but hesitated when the Mazda tried to pass it at full speed,” shared a third.

Police have urged anyone with footage of the incident to come forward.
