GBI announces graduation of two forensic pathologists

ATLANTA – The GBI congratulates two forensic pathologists on their graduation from the 2023-2024 Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program.

Release:

The GBI is proud to announce the graduation of two forensic pathologists from our 2023-2024 Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program. Upon graduation, Dr. Kari Broder and Dr. Taylor Sliker will remain at the GBI as Associate Forensic Pathologists.

Addressing the current shortage of medical examiners is one of the GBI’s top priorities. In recent years, the United States has experienced a significant shortage of certified forensic pathologists. This shortage is causing delays in death investigations, including the timely prosecution and closure of some cases, and the GBI understands the enormous impact this has on families.

These fellows enjoyed an immersive experience that included on- and off-campus instruction in incident scene investigation, toxicology, trace evidence, firearms biology and rotations, cardiac pathology, and even legal training.

“The addition of Dr. Broder and Dr. Sliker to our team will better position our physicians to meet the demand for autopsy requests,” said GBI Director Chris Hosey. “I am confident that the GBI Forensic Pathology Fellowship Program will lead the way in solving not only the medical examiner shortage in Georgia, but also our nation.”

“Dr. Broder and Dr. Sliker overcame a challenging year with training from all angles and cases to complete,” said Geoffrey Smith, GBI Chief Medical Examiner. “I am delighted with their commitment and they have both done an excellent job.”

Dr. Sliker received her medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in 2019. She completed her AP/CP residency at the Medical College of Georgia in June 2023. Dr. Broder received her medical degree from Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2019. She completed her AP/CP residency at Emory University in 2023.
