“Stop Fare Hiking” rally held outside New Jersey Transit headquarters ahead of Monday’s ticket price increase

NEW JERSEY (WABC) — A “Stop Fare Hiking” rally was held Friday morning in front of NJ Transit headquarters in Newark.

The rally took place before a 9 a.m. meeting of NJ Transit’s Operations and Customer Service Committee.

Protesters are demanding a halt to the 15 percent increase in bus and train fares that is due to come into effect on Monday.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill called on NJ Transit to “pause and reevaluate” the increase.

But Gov. Murphy, who controls the agency’s board, said he would leave that decision to the board.

On Thursday, the governor held a meeting with leaders of Amtrak and NJ Transit.

The meeting came after a series of major disruptions along the Northeast Corridor.

Last week, commuters faced delays and cancellations due to power problems and broken-down trains.

Amtrak and NJ Transit officials said they were working together to expedite the investigation into the disruptions and improve reliability between New York and New Jersey.
