Marina Abramović leads seven minutes of silence at Glastonbury

Music festivals aren’t necessarily places you come to relax, and even less so for a festival as gigantic as Glastonbury. But earlier in the day, Serbian artist Marina Abramović managed to silence the crowd for seven minutes, giving attendees a moment to reflect on the state of the world.

According to Guardian, Abramović was scheduled to take the festival’s Pyramid stage at 5:55 p.m., just before PJ Harvey’s set. “There are wars, there are famine, there are protests, there are killings,” Abramović told the audience. “Here we are going to try to do something different. We can all together give each other unconditional love. (It’s) the only way to change the world. To the sound of a gong, Abramović opened her arms to reveal a dress in the shape of the CND peace symbol, designed by former Burberry creative director Riccardo Tisci.

Glastonbury’s capacity is around 200,000 people, and there were other artists performing at the time, so it wasn’t complete silence. But it still had a surprising impact, according to journalists present and clips from the moment.

“We are really facing a dark moment in human history,” Abramović told Guardian “So what can we do? I always think protest leads to more protest; hatred leads to more hatred. I think it’s important to turn inward. It’s easy to criticize everything else, but what can I do within myself, how can I change? »
