Queen Camilla salutes military families who ‘keep the fires alive in their homes’ in Armed Forces Day message

In a nod to her husband’s military service, a historic photograph of the King wearing his Royal Navy uniform as Admiral of the Fleet, taken in the garden of Clarence House, was also placed beside her on Table.

The Queen said she was “honoured” to pay tribute to the men and women of our military, thanking them all “for everything they do to protect our country”. She also paid tribute to those who made the “ultimate sacrifice” in the quest for world peace.

The King and Queen joined world leaders on the beaches of Normandy on June 6 to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings of World War II.

The Queen recalled the ceremony by saying: “We have remembered the incredible bravery of the Allied land, sea and air forces whose combined efforts brought about the liberation of Western Europe and for whom we will be forever indebted.

“Eight decades later, I know that this same spirit and these same qualities remain very present within our Armed Forces, as you assume your duties in the face of a multitude of challenges and dangers.

“In doing so, you are not only protecting these islands, but also defending freedoms far beyond these shores. Your determination, your tireless efforts and your selfless loyalty to each other and to the United Kingdom are as enduring as our gratitude.

The Queen added: “I would also like to thank your families, who keep your home burning while you are deployed overseas. As the proud daughter of an Army officer, I know a little about the impact military life has on your loved ones – you, too, are heroes.

“In times of war and peace, visible or invisible, our armed forces support and strengthen our nation. You are a source of inspiration, comfort and pride – and I salute you all. »

The Queen is patron of the military charity British Forces Broadcasting Service and of the Royal Army Chaplains’ Department. Her other military roles include Colonel of the Grenadier Guards and Colonel-in-Chief of the Rifles.
