150 WestJet flights canceled Saturday due to strike

Nearly 20,000 travelers flocked Saturday after WestJet canceled 150 flights.

The Canadian carrier cancelled flights after unionized mechanics went on strike Friday night, undermining government efforts to prevent travel disruptions over the busy Canada Day long weekend.

“Additional cancellations are expected by Saturday morning if the strike is not called off or immediate action is not taken,” the company said in a statement.

“WestJet is actively and vigorously exploring all possible avenues to minimize disruption, including seeking immediate action from the Minister of Labour.”

WestJet mechanics went on strike just one day after Labor Minister Seamus O’Regan ordered the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to impose binding arbitration to resolve outstanding issues in the contract collective agreement between the airline and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA).

In a statement released Thursday, AMFA said there is no modern precedent for the minister’s action.

The directive comes after two weeks of turbulent negotiations between the union and the airline over a new deal.

Summary of the total cancellation

• About 25 cancellations
• Around 3,300 guests affected

Saturday June 28:

• Around 20,000 guests concerned

Travelers are advised to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
