Sevilla consider terminating defender’s contract after two years of injury hell

Marcão’s time in Seville was pure hell. The Brazilian centre-back, signed for €14 million from Galatasaray in 2022, has faced numerous injuries since arriving in Andalusia, meaning he has only played 21 times over the two seasons previous ones.

Due to injuries, Marcao has been unable to start in either of Sevilla’s last two pre-season campaigns in 2022 and 2023, although he hopes to be available for the start of Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta’s tenure. He played 45 minutes in last season’s final match against Barcelona and came through unfazed.

However, Sevilla do not see the situation in a good light. As reported by Diario AS, the club’s directors are considering terminating Marcao’s contract in the coming weeks, as they believe he is not able to stay fit for an extended period of time.

The problem for Sevilla is that Marcao’s contract runs until 2027, which would mean paying a hefty sum for the final three years of his deal. Given their financial difficulties, they can now afford to do so.
