Drunk driving in Hyderabad: 262 arrested for violating law

In a massive operation, the Cyberabad police arrested 262 commuters for driving under the influence.

On Saturday evening, under the jurisdiction of Cyberabad police station, drunk driving tests were conducted at several locations.

Among those arrested are 191 two-wheeler drivers, 11 three-wheeler drivers, 56 four-wheeler drivers and 4 heavy goods vehicle drivers.

Twelve offenders were caught with blood alcohol levels ranging from 300 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml during drunk driving checks in Hyderabad. All those caught will be produced before the magistrate.

According to the police, anyone found guilty of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing fatal accidents will be arrested and charged under section 304 part 2 of the Indian Penal Code (effective July 1, 2024) and section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (manslaughter not amounting to murder), which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine.

By the evening of June 22, the Cyberabad traffic police had arrested over 385 people for driving under the influence in a similar operation.

Among those arrested were 292 cyclists, 80 four-wheeler drivers, 11 three-wheeler drivers and two large truck drivers.
