Viktor Orbán arrives in Ukraine to meet Zelensky – POLITICO

Their discussion “will focus on the possibilities of achieving peace, as well as on current issues in bilateral relations between Hungary and Ukraine,” Kovacs added.

Orbán has criticized Ukraine for what Budapest sees as its failure to guarantee the rights of its Hungarian minority. kyiv and Brussels have engaged in intense diplomacy with Budapest to address its concerns, with talks earlier this year between Andriy Yermak, the powerful head of Ukraine’s presidency, and Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. Hungary has outlined a list of 11 conditions it is seeking to improve legal protection for minorities before Ukraine will be accepted into the EU.

Orbán’s trip to Ukraine comes a day after Hungary took over the rotating presidency of the EU Council on Monday.
