Newcastle consider signing 20-year-old Portuguese superstar

Newcastle are reportedly considering making a move for Portuguese defender Antonio Silva in this summer’s transfer window.

After a terrible season which saw them finish seventh and eight points off the top four, Eddie Howe will no doubt be under heavy pressure to turn things around at St. James’ Park.

One of the main reasons for their decline this season can be attributed to their poor defensive record, with 62 goals conceded this season compared to 33 last year.

Their backline problems have been highlighted after several key injuries, including that of Sven Botman, with the Dutch footballer a key man for Howe.

It appears the England manager is keen to bring in reinforcements this summer, with a report from Portuguese outlet JN via TBR Football suggesting Newcastle are considering signing Benfica centre-back Silva.

The 20-year-old is coming off another impressive season in Portugal which has earned him plenty of interest from across Europe.

The report claims that Newcastle are preparing an offer of around £50million, a sum which represents half of his release clause.

Silva started for Portugal in their last Euro game against Georgia, although he was on the losing side in a 2-0 defeat.
