Cone filmed frustrated by Gilas defense

GILAS Pilipinas coach Tim Cone could not hide his frustration with his players during their friendly match against Poland on Saturday.

The match was even followed live on Polish national television via Polsat Sport, which broadcast the scuffles of the two teams during timeouts. Of course, the match was also filmed streaming online all the way to Manila.

The Philippines ultimately lost to Poland, 82-80, in their final preparation before the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament which will take place from July 2-7.

Twice in the fourth quarter, Cone showed his disappointment – even uttering curses – in his players for their lackluster performance, particularly on defense when the Poles’ lead blew up during that stretch of the game.

“We’re not even trying any harder,” he said during a timeout at 6:52 of the final period when Gilas trailed 67-56. “Not even a (rough) attempt to come back. You didn’t even come to the rescue on that pass. Nothing.”

“It’s not about saying ‘Hey, yeah, let’s go’ (expletive). It’s all about doing your job, buddy. We look like an Asian team,” he added, reminding his charges that they hope to be on the same level as the European basketball powers.

Cone emphasizes defense

Cone called a timeout again, pointing to the lack of defensive effort, a few minutes later when Poland continued to take control of the game, taking the largest lead of the game at 76-62.

“Our defense just gave up, guys,” he told his players with 5 minutes and 5 seconds left in the game. “We’re not working hard on our defense anymore. We get up. »

“When you’re tired, that’s when you guys have to give it your all here. You have to go lower, be more ready. Again, if you want to play at this level, here are the things you need to do. You can’t just play the way you want. You have to play at this level. That means getting behind you guys, going, chasing, driving, going the extra mile,” he continued.

“If we don’t try harder, we won’t be able to stop these guys. That’s what I talked about in terms of defense. »

Cone’s call seemed to have paid off as the Philippines fought back late in the game, powered by Dwight Ramos. However, their comeback was short-lived and they lost by two points.

The Gilas lost their two preseason games in Europe after also losing to Turkey, 84-73. They now travel to Riga, Latvia for the FIBA TQO.
