The PGA Tour golfer was born on March 3, 1995, in Wolverhampton, England, to immigrant parents Dalvir Shukla and Amrik Singh. With two older sisters and a brother, Rai was the baby of his family. While his mother Dalvir Shukla juggled multiple jobs, working as a mental health nurse and an aerobics instructor, his father Amrik worked as a social worker. Watching his parents work hard while he was growing up, Rai learned the value of hard work and appreciated the things he had.

Rai started playing golf at a very young age. As a toddler, he would play with his brother’s hockey stick and often get bruises. Like any mother, his mother gave him a set of plastic clubs to protect him from bruises. Enthusiasm for the sport ran in the family, as his father was a big tennis fan. Rai often accompanied his father to tennis matches. His natural tennis swing caught his father’s attention. Recognizing that Rai’s swing was better suited to golf, his father encouraged him to take up the sport, and the rest, as they say, “is history.”

Amrik began reading golf books to further help his son with the sport and gave Rai his first branded club when he was just 7 years old, the Titleist 690 MBs which was the best Titleist club at the time. According to Golf Digest, Rai practiced and learned new strategies from his coach Shaun Ball. “Put Aaron in different situations and let him figure it out.”These motivating words from his coach made Rai the golfer we know today.

While the golfer was training hard and his father was trying to raise funds to secure his future, a savior arrived, Shabir Randeree, owner of the first golf course that Rai joined as a beginner. Randeree quickly became a close family friend and financed Rai’s golf training and private high school education. He is still Rai’s sponsor to this day.

“It is difficult – and expensive – to be a touring professional, but thanks to his support I was able to enjoy my golf education without undue financial pressure, but his belief in me and spiritual support were just as important to me,” Rai said, in an interview with GolfPlus, that he appreciates the support Randeree has given him all these years.

Finally, the day came when all the hard work paid off. In 2012, the golfer brought fame to the family by turning professional. Rai believed it was the right decision to turn professional at the age of 17 and time has only proven him right. “I have no regrets, it was the perfect time to turn professional and learn what it took to play professionally from a relatively early age,” said Rai.

Rai had a memorable moment in his career in 2017, at a tournament in Kenya. His mother, who was returning home for the first time since he was 14, joined him on the 18th green when he won. It was Mother’s Day in the UK, which made the win even more special for the golfer.

Who is Rai’s younger brother?

Throughout his career, Rai has enjoyed strong support from his family, friends and his caddy, Jason Timmis, who was a well-established golfer himself before beginning his caddy journey. After being a professional for almost 5 years, he decided to turn to coaching. Before Rai, Timmis was a caddy for Gian Marco Petrozzi.
