Coconut Creek High School students participating in the mentoring program now have a dedicated room for meetings and mentoring sessions with successful women in the community.

The room, located above the school’s gymnasium, was inaugurated on June 5, just before the end of the school year.

Doctor Nicole Nearor, Coco Creek’s director, mayor Sandra WelchCommissioner John Brodie and members of the Coconut Creek Women’s Club attended.

According to Emily Maher, president of the Women’s Club, the room was made available to students after they met in random classrooms and didn’t have a dedicated space.

The members were part of the school’s cheerleading team and were looking to partner with mentors. Members of the women’s club helped renovate the room by painting, cleaning and patching holes. Club members promised to help even more next year.

“Nobody knew this room was there and we were going to make it a special place,” Maher said.

Maher, a Coconut Creek resident and owner of Maher Insurance Group, provided financial aid. “Next year we will contact businesses and ask for donations. »

In the coming year, the Women’s Club will work to enhance the mentoring program and expose members to various opportunities available to them. Maher hopes to motivate them to visit local businesses and organizations where they can meet successful women. In addition, the club will organize visits from women leaders to share their experiences with students.

“We’ll have full mentoring and show them a higher bar. Some students don’t know what they want to do after high school, and we want to answer their questions,” Maher said.
