Analysis of the Broncos’ financial commitments to the Safety Room in 2024

The period of constitution of the list Denver Broncos The offseason is over, so we continue to analyze the financial resources the team has invested at each position. Today we end this series by looking at the safety position, where the Broncos made a significant change this offseason – releasing Pro Bowl safety Justin Simmons.

The Broncos replaced Simmons with Brandon Jones, who is a 2024 free agent, and re-signed P.J. Locke, who was given the other starting safety job through the 2023 season. Jones and Locke represent the Broncos’ biggest financial commitments at the position.

Jones is set to make $7 million in fully guaranteed money in 2024, while Locke is set to make $3.5 million in fully guaranteed money. After that, the Broncos have virtually no cash commitment at the position. Here’s a look at the safeties remaining on the roster and the money they’re owed in 2024.

  • Delarrin Turner-Yell: $985,000.
  • Tanner McCalister: $925,000.
  • Omar Brown $815,000 ($245,000 fully guaranteed).

Cash commitments for the security position total about $16 million, which isn’t much. As with other positions, cash commitments will change depending on the final list.

Sterns has missed most of the last two seasons due to injuries, so he’ll have to prove he’s worth keeping around, otherwise the Broncos could go with someone else, even if it’s not a big difference in terms of money saved. Turner-Yell suffered an ACL injury late in the 2023 season and could open training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list if he has not fully recovered.

Regardless, the Broncos will see a significant difference in cash commitments for the safety position now that Simmons is gone. Even though Simmons was a popular player who did good things, the Broncos ultimately decided they could get similar production for less money.

Only time will tell if this was the right decision.
