Could the Warriors star consider the Detroit Pistons in free agency?

One of the biggest storylines of the 2024 free agency period revolves around the future of Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson.

For weeks, it has been suggested that Thompson’s time with the Warriors could be coming to an end. Turns out Thompson is working on a change of scenery and is expected to meet with a handful of teams soon.

Could the Detroit Pistons be on the star shooting guard’s radar? According to ESPN Adrian Wojnarowski, Thompson Won’t Watch Pistons Right Now.

There are four teams in the running for Thompson, where the interest is mutual. According to Wojnarowski, the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, LA Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers are all worthy of a meeting with the All-Star guard.

The lack of interest in Detroit isn’t a shock. When it became clear Thompson might hit free agency, there were reports he was interested in landing with a title contender.

The Pistons have struggled for several seasons, failing to make the playoffs since 2019. Last year, Detroit finished the 2023-24 season with a 14-68 record. It was the worst record in the league and marked the second consecutive time that the Pistons failed to surpass 20 wins.

Detroit could have fought for Thompson’s services if they were looking for the best possible contract. With plenty of cap space, the Pistons can afford to spend a fortune on one of the top stars on the market. Given that Thompson is more interested in a specific situation than contract numbers, the Pistons won’t be interested in him.

Last year, Thompson appeared in 77 games for Golden State. He averaged 18 points while shooting 39 percent from three. In nearly 800 games, Thompson averaged 20 points throughout his career. He has established himself as one of the best three-point shooters in the NBA since joining the Warriors in 2011.
