Coldplay won the award for Glastonbury 2024’s most memorable moment when they performed a surprise duet with Hollywood legend Michael J. Fox during their Saturday night headline set.

Michael played guitar from his wheelchair, amid his battle with Parkinson’s disease, alongside band Humankind and Fix You in front of a delighted crowd of 100,000.

And it was a full circle moment for frontman Chris Martin, 47, who revealed how his world chart-topping band wouldn’t exist without the Back to the Future star, 63.

Chris emotionally told the emotional crowd: “The main reason we’re in a band is because we watch Back to the Future,”

“So I want to say a big thank you to our forever hero and one of the most extraordinary people on the planet, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you very much, Michael.”

This isn’t the first time the group, made up of Chris, Will Champion, Johnny Buckland and Guy Berryman, has done a duet with Michael.

Chris previously explained how seeing Michael play Johnny B. Goode in an iconic scene from Back to the Future in 1985 inspired him to become a musician and form his band at University College London in 1996.

“That’s what made me want to be in a band, you know? That scene, yeah,” he told Kelly Clarkson on her chat show in 2022:

Michael previously appeared with the band at their 2016 concert in New York and performed songs from their hit film.

The 2016 appearance was a request from Chris’ then ten-year-old son Moses, with a video request released to the public before the surprise appearance.

In the song, Moses, whose mother is actress Gwyneth Paltrow, addresses his father, saying, “I was wondering if you could play a song from our two favorite movies, Back to the Future.” I love you so much. »

“Well, if your son asks you to do something…” Chris said before starting Earth Angel by the Penguins, one of the songs that Fox’s character, Marty McFly, performed in the dance Enchantment Under the Sea from Back to the Future, before the actor appeared in scene.

The band and actor then launched into a rendition of Chuck Berry’s Johnny B. Goode.

‘Our hero!’ Chris shouted as the song came to a close. ‘Michael J. Fox!’ before adding that it was “our dream come true”.

In another selection circle moment, Moses, now 18, was spotted watching his father’s slot at Glastonbury on Saturday with his older sister Apple, 20, and friends.

Three years before Moses’ request for the 2016 concert, Coldplay and Michael performed together at a benefit show in New York for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Michael established the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2008, years after going public with his Parkinson’s disease.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, Michael echoed Chris’s glowing compliments over the year, admitting the experience was “mind-blowing.”

“Glastonbury, all my love and thanks to the @coldplay team who took great care of us. And a big thank you to Chris, Will, Johnny, Guy and Phil. »

“Oh yeah, in case you were wondering…it was mind blowing.” There is a time for every group and a group for every moment. It’s @coldplay time.’
