Hotel Gives Woman’s Room Key To Stranger, She Records Everything

A woman was worried for her safety when the hotel she was staying in accidentally gave a man access to her room.

Janelle Rupkalvis, from Washington, is a full-time content creator who shares updates about her life and goes to her TikTok account @janelleonajet.

On a recent trip to New York, the 30-year-old realized the hotel had welcomed someone else into her room when her television turned off and instead showed a welcome message addressed to a man.

Rupkalvis immediately began recording “for my own safety and because I wanted proof of everything that was going to happen,” as she expected someone to come into her room. She captured the moment a man knocked on her door.

The incident happened at the Tempo by Hilton Times Square hotel, a hotel spokesperson said. Newsweek, “The well-being, safety and security of our customers and team members are of paramount importance and allegations such as these are taken very seriously.”

“We can share that there was an isolated check-in error in a room last week, which the Tempo by Hilton Times Square team immediately resolved,” the spokesperson said.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to guest safety, the Tempo by Hilton Times Square leadership team has reviewed check-in procedures with front desk staff and continues to do everything possible to ensure all practices are in line with strict safety and security protocols.

In the clip, the man on the other side of the door apologizes and explains that he realized there must already be someone in the room because Rupkalvis had left a bag containing containers of food finished outside.

The couple have a brief conversation, with Rupkalvis thanking him for knocking rather than barging in, and she telling him Newsweek she was grateful that he was “extremely kind and observant.”

But, she added, “this is a huge risk to safety and security.”

“I could have been sleeping, showering, etc. and this stranger had full access to enter my room. And if I wasn’t in the room at the time, this incident would have opened my door as well. possibility of theft,” she said.

“How often does this happen when no one is in the room at the time?”

New York City has a high crime rate, with 126,589 crimes committed in 2022 alone, according to Statista.

Among these, the most frequently committed crime was robbery (the theft of a high-value object), with 51,565 cases.

TikTok users were horrified, with one writing: “Thank god he was a safe man. This could have played out like a horror movie.”

Another admitted he was glad the man involved “handled this so carefully, I can only imagine how panicked I would have been.”

And one user shared their own horror story, writing: “You’re so lucky he’s nice and you’re awake! I had a man standing at the foot of my bed in Morocco.”

Rupkalvis called the hotel’s response “completely disappointing,” saying she “didn’t feel like they took my concerns seriously,” saying they only apologized for the “inconvenience, completely ignoring the safety risk they exposed me to.”

Rupkalvis says she was offered 7,000 points as an apology, and was eventually increased to 20,000 points when she was unhappy. But like she said Newsweek“That barely covers a quarter of the cost of a single night’s stay here. »

Hilton hotels and resorts offer a points system, with 10 base Hilton Honors points earned for every dollar spent. These points are earned by booking rooms, using room services and making other related charges.
