Traffic stop ends with driver attempting to hit police officer, police officer shoots at car

A Greenbrier police officer shot at a vehicle late last week after the driver tried to hit the officer as he fled the scene of a traffic stop.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in at the request of District Attorney General Robert Nash to investigate the shooting.

According to a news release from the TBI, a trooper stopped a Nissan Maxima Friday evening in the 100 block of Candy Lane. A woman got out of the passenger side of the car, then the driver, identified as Jalon Devon Smith, fled and “attempted to strike the officer,” according to the release.

The officer fired at the car as Smith fled.

The woman has not been identified.

Smith was arrested Saturday afternoon, according to Robertson County Jail records.

Smith was charged with evading arrest, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, assault on a first responder and driving with a suspended license.
