The Crooked Man trailer hints at an R-rated reboot inspired by indie horror

Hellboy is back, baby! The first trailer for the upcoming reboot titled Hellboy: The Crooked Man takes iconic franchises in a much darker direction.

Hellboy is one of the most beloved franchises in the superhero genre, with the first two films starring Ron Perlman being considered some of the best action films on the scene. Although the franchise stumbled somewhat with its last reboot starring David Harbour, it seems to be taking a whole new direction with Hellboy: The Crooked Man.

Moving away from the big-budget Hollywood world, Hellboy: The Twisted Man is meant to be an R-rated reboot of the iconic franchise. It’s an attempt to return the franchise to its roots in folk horror, instead of the apocalyptic stakes popularized by the character’s more recent incarnations.

Hellboy finds himself in a whole new world

Hellboy fans will immediately feel something different with this first trailer for the reboot. Instead of trying to bring up old movies, Hellboy: The Crooked Man takes inspiration from some of the biggest horror hits of the last decade like The witch as the titular hero traverses the Appalachian Mountains.

Hellboy: The Twisted Man also features a much younger version of Cambion’s caped crusader. Jack Kesy plays Hellboy in the reboot. While some fans appreciated the different direction this trailer gave the series, others complained about its cheap look, especially when it came to Kesy’s makeup. But when it comes to movies like this, fans only remember their complaints if the movie flops!
