Summerton Mayor Mac Bagnal announces unexpected resignation

SUMMERTON, SC (WIS) – Summerton Mayor Mac Bagnal has announced his resignation.

Bagnal was elected in a special election following the death of then-Summerton Mayor Tony Junious, who died in a car accident in January at the age of 48.

In a public letter, Bagnal said “recent circumstances” had led him to reconsider his ability to continue in the role. He said he had found it difficult to ensure staff were “properly trained and informed of current legal requirements and their duties.”

“As mayor, it is crucial to uphold the highest standards of governance, and I believe my failure to address these operational challenges compromises the quality of service that Summerton deserves,” Bagnal said in the letter.

Bagnal also said his mother’s health needed more time and attention.

“Summerton will always hold a special place in my heart and I remain committed to its continued success and prosperity,” Bagnal said.

He said his resignation is effective immediately.
