Broncos QB room ranked by national publication: ‘Quite a headache’

THE Denver Broncos“The quarterback room continues to come under scrutiny as the NFL summer progresses. Just days after former NFL quarterback Jordan Palmer complimented Denver’s QB roomthe unit was hit by Launderer’s Report.

With Bo Nix, Jarrett Stidham and Zach Wilson crossing swords later this month, Ryan Fowler of B/R ranked Denver’s quarterback situation the fifth worst in the NFL. Here’s how he rationalized it.

“The Broncos spent the No. 12 overall pick on Bo Nix, who is expected to take over as QB1 sooner rather than later. The Broncos split first-team reps between Nix, returnee Jarrett Stidham and newly acquired Zach Wilson during OTAs, but the job appears to be one that Nix will lose this summer.

“While Nix appears to be the guy for the short and long term, the Broncos found themselves in a tricky situation heading into training camp. Three quarterbacks, one starting role, each signal caller with questions abounding about their overall performance ceiling,” Fowler wrote.

It’s July 1st. News regarding the Broncos is thin.

Fowler didn’t really justify his ranking by making any qualifying statements about any of Denver’s three quarterbacks — only saying that there are “questions galore,” though he didn’t really outlined what the overwhelming volume of questions might be.

Nix was nationally regarded as a second-round quarterback who the Broncos “got” by drafting him 12th overall. While Sean Payton scoffs at such stances, dismissing them as opinions held by people who “I don’t know what they’re talking about“, is the national perception of Nix.

Take Nix’s national media profile and complement it with the reputation of a career journeyman with four NFL starts and a former No. 2 overall pick who might as well have the word. BUSH tattooed on his forehead, and it’s easy to understand the lemming nature of the ubiquitous offseason rosters.

Few of these journalists, including Fowler, go further than this superficial reading of the situation in Denver. They don’t actually watch video of Nix at Oregon, or examine the advanced analytics and other metrics that depict the Broncos’ first-rounder’s true abilities at quarterback.

And even fewer seem to recognize the strange plan Nix has with Payton. To perceive such things, one would have to spend time researching the subject. These cats can’t be bothered by that; they have a quota to meet.

At the risk of further encouraging the proliferation of frenzied NFL lists in the media, I am writing this. If it wasn’t July 1st, I wouldn’t care. But for what it’s worth, here’s what Palmer, who spent a lot of time with Nix before he was drafted, said recently about the Broncos’ QB room.

“I think, quietly, the Denver Broncos have just built one of the best rooms of young quarterbacks in the league, coupled with one of the best offensive minds we’ve seen since I’ve been around,” Palmer said.

He’s an analyst who knows his stuff. They say a true expert in his field can predict the future to some extent. Palmer knows what he’s talking about, and he was right about CJ Stroud a year ago.

Time will tell whether his analysis of Nix proves to be as accurate as that of Stroud and the Houston Texans Last year.
