Euro 2024: Why a minute of silence during the Portugal-Slovenia round of 16?

The round of 16 match between Portugal and Slovenia was marked by a minute’s silence at the Frankfurt Arena before kick-off.

It was for Portugal and Seleção legend Manuel Fernandes, who passed away last week.

Fernandes died on June 27 at the age of 73.

With 257 goals in all competitions, he is the second highest goalscorer in Sporting CP’s history. He also scored seven goals for Portugal in 31 appearances.

He then returned to Sporting CP as a coach: first as an assistant, then as head coach in 2000/01, winning the Supertaça. He also served as director, in charge of the B team and, during a second spell, of the scouting department.

In the last years of his life he worked as a commentator on Sports television and as an ambassador of Sporting CP.
