Eid events curtailed at Edgbaston Stadium in rain – what you can and can’t do

According to Green Lane Mosque, the annual Eid celebration at Edgbaston Stadium has been “cancelled” due to heavy rain and high winds. However, some events will still go ahead. The cancellation follows a similar Eid cancellation at Small Heath Park, which has been moved indoors for Eid prayers only.

According to GLM, the leisure areas with bouncy castles will be maintained from 9am to 1pm and the brunch from 10:30am to 1pm. However, Eid prayers at the stadium are cancelled.

This is the second major outdoor Eid event in Birmingham to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions. Eid celebrations at Small Heath Park were cancelled due to “waterlogged grass” and “further rain forecast”. Eid prayers are still due to take place, but inside the mosque.

GLM said in a statement: “Based on the prophetic saying ‘Observe the fast when you see it (the new moon) and break the fast when you see it (the new moon), but if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number (of thirty days)’.

“We are pleased to announce that, as there have been no confirmed sightings of the moon, Eid al-Fitr will take place on Wednesday 10 April 2024. Due to waterlogged grass and further rain forecast, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel Eid prayers at Small Heath Park and Edgbaston Stadium.

“Therefore, there will be five separate congregational prayers at Green Lane Mosque, to accommodate the large number of expected participants. The Eid prayers will take place at the following times:

  • 6:30 a.m. hosted by: Sh Ahsan Hanif

  • 7:30 a.m. hosted by: Mustafa Abu Rayyan

  • 8:30 a.m. hosted by: Qari Zakaullah Saleem

  • 9:30 a.m. hosted by: Sh Aqeel Mahmoud

  • 10:30 am led by: Sh Hafeezullah Khan”
