Hotline Documentary Video: MNT – The Silent Epidemic

This documentary looks at the alarming rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Ghana, a crisis affecting millions of people and placing a significant burden on the country’s health system and economy.

The number of deaths from noncommunicable diseases is very high worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that a total of 41 million deaths, or more than 71% of deaths worldwide, are due to noncommunicable diseases.

It is also estimated that more than 80% of NCD deaths worldwide are due to these four groups of NCDs: cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes.

In Ghana, demographic data on noncommunicable diseases is very limited. Despite this, available data from research and surveys suggest that noncommunicable diseases and their associated risk factors are increasing.

Through the stories of people like Mercy Ogborzor (living with diabetes), Kwabena Frimpong Ntiamoah (living with diabetes and hypertension) and Rosemary Boadu (living with end-stage renal disease), viewers gain an intimate understanding of the human impact behind the statistics.

This documentary was co-produced by Emmanuel Dzivenu and Seyram Abla De-Souza.
