On the corner of Hawthorne and Central avenues, new performance and event venue The Long Room is launching a monthly music series, TLR Presents, opening the space to artists who otherwise couldn’t afford to showcase their work there. .

Since opening in fall 2023, The Long Room has hosted a wide variety of events from weddings and private events to dance performances and album release parties.

Until now, these events (with the exception of Tango CLT, which is hosted by Long Room owners Matt Seneca and Sarah Hayes Harkins) have all been rentals. The TLR presentations will represent something new for The Long Room: curated programming.

Local dance and video artist Megan Payne worked with Seneca and Harkins to curate the new series. “We’ll have a new genre, a new sound every month,” Payne says. “I’m starting with musical acts, but eventually we hope to bring in theatre and dance artists to join in.”

Artists will be invited to use the Long Room free of charge and will be able to set their own ticket prices, while the Long Room will take the proceeds from the bar, which serves beer, wine and soft drinks.

The idea is to transform Mondays, traditionally quiet evenings for nightlife and live music, into something eagerly awaited, with careful programming and entries for all ages. Shows will take place early and end no later than 11 p.m.

TLR presents opens with local offbeat rock darlings Modern Moxie backed by the slightly more aggressive Petrov Monday July 1st.

Asked why she wanted to launch the series with Modern Moxie, Payne said, “First of all, I love their sound, but also their performances are super energetic, which seemed like a perfect fit for our intimate space. They also have a really loyal following of fans that we want to introduce to The Long Room.”

Modern Moxie frontwoman Madison Lucas, meanwhile, said she’s been looking forward to playing the Long Room ever since she attended a recital for one of her music students.

“It’s a beautiful space for performances and I’m very happy that Megan and the owners of The Long Room have put together an event that supports working musicians,” she said. “Monday nights are normally quieter evenings for the stage and we are excited to bring a new event to the Charlotte community for an early, family-friendly option.” »

Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m., with tickets costing $10. Find them at tinyurl.com/TLRPresents. Follow @thelongroomclt on Instagram for updates on future shows.
