Teen charged with weapons following traffic stop in North Peoria, police say

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — A 17-year-old boy was arrested last week for allegedly possessing a handgun capable of firing automatically, Peoria police said.

The teen was arrested after officers saw him shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday, June 27, in the 1200 block of West Lincoln Avenue in South Peoria. He was “wanted” for a previous incident in Peoria County, said Semone Roth, a Peoria police spokeswoman.

She wrote in a news release that officers saw the boy get into a car which then drove off. Officers later saw the car stop in the 1300 block of West Northmoor Road, near Cusack Orthodontics and Just Kidz Dentistry.

Officers took the boy into custody and let the driver drive away. When they searched the vehicle, they found a loaded Glock 17 pistol equipped with a switch that allowed it to fire automatically. The weapon also contained an extended magazine, Roth said.

The teenager was taken to the police station where he was later arrested for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a machine gun, lack of a FOID card and possession of a firearm under the age of 21.

The boy was taken to the Peoria County Juvenile Detention Center. It was not immediately clear whether the boy had been formally charged in court or remained at the detention center.
