Have you ever dreamed of owning a full-fledged Ferrari racing car? If the answer is yes, it’s time to act because a 2020 Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo is up for auction with no reserve.

Competing in the Ferrari Challenge North America series, the race car comes with a clean Washington State title and all the features that make it eligible for competition. Now dressed in orange and blue, the Ferrari still relies on the motorsport-specification bodywork elements that set it apart from its road-legal sibling.

I’m talking about the large carbon fiber rear wing, front spoiler and side wings, Lexan side windows, dual quick-fill fuel caps, and center-lock forged alloy wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero racing tires. The exterior is in very good condition, save for a few “scuffs and other blemishes.”

The interior features a single Sabelt bucket seat with a carbon fiber shell and a six-point harness. There is also a rearview camera atop the dash, enhanced video data recording by Racelogic, a Motorola race radio, and an OMP fire suppression system. Like the exterior, the interior shows some wear, but is in excellent condition overall.

The 488 Challenge Evo features the original 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine behind the rear seats. Equipped with a lighter exhaust system than the non-Evo version, the engine produces 661 horsepower and 759 Nm of torque. All of this power is sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed close-ratio dual-clutch transaxle and an electronic limited-slip differential.

The seller does not provide details on the car’s racing career, but the odometer reads 13,000 km. He does point out, however, that the Ferrari has not been registered for road use as it is not road-legal.

The 488 Challenge is the sixth Ferrari developed for the single-make series. It all started with the 348 Challenge in 1993, followed by the F355 Challenge in 1995 and the 360 Modena Challenge in 2000. Ferrari introduced the F430 Challenge in 2006 and the 458 Challenge in 2011. The latter was followed by the improved 458 Challenge Evo in 2014.

The 488 Challenge debuted in 2017, just as the road-legal 488 GTB was arriving in dealerships. The Challenge is one of three versions of the 488 developed by Ferrari for motorsport. The company introduced the GTE and GT3 versions for the 2016 racing season. Both cars won major events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 488 GTE also won the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2017.

The 488 Challenge was updated to Evo specifications in 2020. It remained in use in the Ferrari Challenge until 2023. In 2024, Ferrari presented a successor based on the 296 sports car.

The unreserved bid reached $81,000 with five days to go, which is a far cry from the race car’s original $250,000 asking price. The car doesn’t come with any spare parts, which is a bummer for potential buyers who want to race it. However, the seller says he can arrange to sell “spare wheels or other parts separately.”

Prices will likely rise, as no 488 Challenge has sold for less than $150,000 in the United States. Ferrari dealers are currently asking between $190,000 and $400,000 for used, low-mileage examples.
