Ranking the “A Quiet Place” Movies and the Imitations They’re Inspired By

One of the most surprising franchises of recent years, A quiet place: first day is bringing the franchise back to theaters. The third film in a decade, starring John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, and now Lupita N’yongo, has proven it can hold up. The franchise has a lot going for it, so much so that a few similar films and series have used similar content. A few of these films existed or were in production at the same time as A Quiet Place. Still, their similarity speaks to Hollywood’s never-ending drive to release films with similar themes and ideas simultaneously.

The silence (2019)

Unfortunately for The silenceThe film starring Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka forces its audience to imagine a world where sound attracts monsters. The silence was in production at the same time as A quiet placewhich is an unfortunate coincidence. However, The silence also loses points due to poor execution of interesting ideas.

There are some very disturbing images throughout the film, including Tucci killing his dog and a woman forced to fight monsters while trying to protect a baby (we cut before the implied results). The silence has some questionable effects and, halfway through, introduces a cult that literally uses cell phones as a “suicide bomb” so it can reproduce with Shipka. The odd choices doom this one.

Nicolas Cage in Arcadian

Arcadian (2024)

Nicolas Cage vs. the Apocalypse will always be something we want to experience. Nicolas Cage vs. Scary Monsters only raises the stakes. 2024’s latest addition to the unofficial “A quiet place canon” forces families to hide in their homes when the sun goes down. There are some very cool creatures, but the cool idea loses some of its appeal halfway through. The effects can’t really hold up in the second half, but Arcadian It’s a fun moment when he hits his notes.

Birdhouse: Barcelona (2023)

The change of narrative in Birdhouse: Barcelona The film was a welcome change to the post-apocalyptic formula. While Sandra Bullock didn’t return, the change in location made that impossible. Despite the loss of that power, there are many moments in Bird Box: Barcelona that are far more entertaining than others on this list. To its credit, some sequences are simply stunning (particularly the “Day 1” of the event and the bus crash in the warehouse at the beginning). However, despite some strong performances, its cast doesn’t quite live up to the others on the list. Bird Box: Barcelona rises well above most disaster movie sequels, but still falls somewhere in the middle of our list here.

Sandra Bullock in Bird Box spin-off

Birdhouse (2018)

Months later A quiet place I never felt like it diminished Susanne Bier’s work. Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes develop excellent chemistry, and their relationship drives much of BirdhouseBier’s success. Both have always been talented, and it was great to see Rhodes show that he could hold his own against another great performer. This is Bullock’s film. They stand out from the crowd, which is made up of brilliant names with very small roles. Bier makes Birdhouse It’s the best movie on this list, and there’s a reason it spawned memes and a sequel within a few years.

A quiet place (2018)

The event that started the trend remains one of the best films of 2018. John Krasinski delivers the best performance of his career, and Blunt’s exceptional performance has since become legendary. She even won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. While John Krasinski and Emily Blunt were a brilliant duo at the top of the film, Krasinski’s direction sealed the deal. The sound design and incredible emotion woven throughout the film make A quiet place a special film.

It’s also a masterful lesson in tension, and when audiences bought into the pitch, there have been few better theatrical experiences in the 2010s. However, the script stands out as the weakest of the trilogy, and too many of its moments feel great as storyboards but are unearned in the narrative. The opening scene feels too contrived, especially with the way the pre-credits sequence ends. It falls short of the other two A quiet place movies just for that.

A Quiet Place, Part II (2021)

The continuation of 2020 A quiet place was delayed to 2022 due to COVID-19, but its effectiveness never waned. Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy’s showcase became a precursor to the evening Oppenheimerallowing each of the actors to tap into the emotion that a series of events like this would provoke. A stellar performance from Millicent Simmonds allows the film to take another leap forward. It’s a richer film in this regard and holds up better to a re-read than the first film. However, the ending also feels frustratingly convenient, particularly for the Simmonds/Murphy aspect.

A quiet place: first day (2024)

This is perhaps the biggest surprise of A quiet place: first day that’s how good it turned out. With expectations starting to dwindle, it would be easy to dismiss this as “just another Peaceful place “The Movie.” However, it doesn’t take long for us to see new aspects of the story take shape. First off, Lupita Nyong’o is on pace to deliver the franchise’s best performance. There may be no actress alive who is better at contorting her face and creating character rhythms in silence.

Second, director Michael Sarnoski once again demonstrates his ability to extract emotion from his scripts. He finds a way to make ordinary moments of life profound and relatable, even while eating a slice of pizza or watching a puppet show.

Finally, framing the Apocalypse through the eyes of a dying person shouldn’t work. We know that death is coming, and therefore, sacrifices or decisions shouldn’t matter as much to the audience. However, through Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn’s performances, Sarnoski draws strength from the moments they spend together. Even as melancholy and doom weighs on them, there is hope and achievable goals that we identify with. With the strongest script, very cool Aliens-stylish visuals and the ability to filter between thunderous and calm sequences, A quiet place: first day rises to the top of the crowd.
