Los Angeles Lakers’ shocking offer for Klay Thompson revealed

The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly reached a trade agreement with the Golden State Warriors to sign four-time NBA champion Klay Thompson. By winning the Thompson sweepstakes, which reportedly drew strong interest from the Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas secures an elite three-point shooter with championship experience as they attempt to defend their Western Conference championship and pursue an NBA title.

Lakers star LeBron James was reportedly heavily involved in his team’s recruitment of Thompson, but failed to bring the champion to Los Angeles. According to Bleacher Report’s Chris Haynes, this was not due to a lack of commitment from the Lakers, as they were reportedly willing to sign Thompson for $20 million per season.

Haynes said that would have been facilitated by a trade that would have brought D’Angelo Russell back to Golden State, where he spent part of a season. Thompson’s contract with Dallas would be for three years and $50 million, which is less than what Haynes had said was on the table in Los Angeles.

Ultimately, it appears Thompson most relished a chance to compete for an NBA championship next season as a high-profile offensive weapon, something Dallas can provide to a much greater degree than Golden State or Los Angeles, which are further removed from contention.
