Workers work day and night to prepare for the opening of the Salem Fair

SALEM, Va. (WDBJ) – The Salem Fair is back this week!

As the first day approaches, a lot is happening.

“The rest of the carnival rides are coming here, the food booths are coming, our performers are coming,” said Carey Harveycutter, Salem Fair Director.

Starting Wednesday, the fair will resume operations, with more than 50 food stalls, rides and games set to be set up, organizers say there is plenty to do.

“Roller coasters are always the slowest to roll because they have the most parts,” Harveycutter says.

Each journey must then be subject to inspection.

“We have an independent inspector who inspects every attraction. Our supervisors inspect the attractions before him, and then we do daily inspections and it’s all recorded in a report,” explains attractions coordinator James Ingram.

This is a free fair, meaning there is no entrance fee. However, games, food and rides will require a fee.

“We have a clear bag policy that we follow. So if you’re bringing stuff in, you can’t bring a big wallet. You can have a small purse,” Harveycutter says.

Organizers encourage people to bring water with them.

“It’s going to be hot, so make sure you have plenty of water and stay hydrated. Don’t forget to have sunscreen because in the heat of the day you can get sunburned pretty quickly,” Harveycutter said.

“The opening day is this Wednesday, July 3rd, the fair will be open on weekdays from 4pm to 10pm and from 12pm to 10pm on weekends. More information can be found on the fair website.
