Why Jurgen Klopp chose ‘Thank you my love’ as Liverpool’s final message

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp salutes the Kop after his final game in charge against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on May 19, 2024

Liverpool may have been wearing their new 2024/25 home kit for the season finale against Wolves on Sunday.

But it was not the on-pitch attire that caught the most attention at an emotional Anfield as the Reds said goodbye to manager Jurgen Klopp and several other stalwarts.

When the Reds returned to the pitch after the match for the post-match celebrations and awards ceremony, Klopp and his team – and Joel Matip – were all wearing a specially designed bright red hoodie or T-shirt.

On the back was the message ‘I’ll never walk alone again’ while on the front was a heart-shaped image of the Kop in all its glory with the words ‘Thank you my love’ around it.

And it has now emerged that Klopp himself had the tops made to show his appreciation to both his colleagues and Liverpool fans.

While the message on the back was an obvious nod to Anfield anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, the words on the front took on a double meaning for the late Reds boss.

The words ‘thank you’ and ‘luv’ are terms that speak for themselves. But for Klopp, who lived in Formby during his almost nine years as Liverpool manager, the phrase ‘thank you luv’ is a common Scouse phrase, one he regularly heard on his travels to Merseyside.

He also used those words to sign his open letter to the ECHO on Saturday morning, and at the end of his final match programme. It was a final nod to the city he admits to falling in love with.
