Florida man caught on camera throwing large objects off New York building

An NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE the man was arrested about 15 minutes after he “illegally” entered the building and began throwing objects from its patio.

New York police arrested a Florida man Friday after they saw him throwing furniture from a high-rise building in Midtown Manhattan.

An NYPD spokesperson tells PEOPLE that officers responded to a call shortly after 2 p.m. local time and arrested Jean Oliver, 33, about 15 minutes after she began throwing furniture from the 20th floor of the building at 555 Fifth Ave., near 46th Street.

“Once inside the premises, the man proceeded to the 20th floor outdoor terrace, where he threw numerous pieces of furniture (tables, benches, chairs) onto the sidewalk and street as pedestrians walked by,” the spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

A large crowd had gathered on the street below to watch Oliver continue to yell and throw objects from the top of the building. Other groups gathered in nearby office buildings to watch the scene from across the street.

Oliver, who police said is from West Park, Florida, was charged with burglary, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief and criminal trespass.

Videos of the incident have been circulating on social media in recent days.

In video Posted on the Citizen app from across the street, a shirtless man can be seen throwing chairs and tables off the top of a high-rise building with the Empire State Building in the background.

At several points in the video, the man is seen continuing to throw furniture off the roof, raising his arms in the air, shouting and waving at onlookers, and arguing with passersby who are yelling at him from several floors below.

“Oh my God!” a person could be heard shouting in the background of the video, watching the man continue to throw heavy objects off the roof.

Others wondered why it took so long for police to respond to the incident and whether the shirtless man might have escaped without being caught.

“I don’t think he wants to run away,” one person responds to this idea, while witnesses continue to observe the man.

Local news outlet PIX11 reported that police appeared to have closed off part of the street in response to the incident.

No one was injured by the falling debris, according to the The New York Daily News.
