Barcelona make social media blunder as Man City ‘eye’ surprise Chelsea move

Manchester City’s preparations for the 2024-25 season will begin in the coming days, with Premier League sides set to begin pre-season.

Manager Pep Guardiola will be targeting a seventh Premier League title of his tenure at City as he looks to once again fend off competition from Arsenal and Liverpool.

In the meantime, before preparations for the new campaign begin, we take a look at the latest news and rumours surrounding City.

Barcelona delete farewell message to City loanee

Barcelona have reportedly deleted a farewell post to Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo.

Cancelo has spent the 2023-24 season at the La Liga giants and is expected to return to the Etihad after his loan deal ends at the end of June.

On Sunday, Barcelona posted a message on X thanking the right-back for his efforts during the season, writing: “Moltes Gracies”.

However, Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Barcelona have held talks with Cancelo’s agents about a return to the Camp Nou this summer.

MEN Sport says: Cancelo has not played a competitive game for Manchester City since 2022, and it appears the Portugal international has no future at the Etihad. Despite being considered one of the most influential players in Pep Guardiola’s system, Cancelo’s value has plummeted in recent years and as a result he has spent the last 18 months on loan at Bayern Munich and Barcelona respectively.

In recent weeks, Cancelo has made no secret of his desire to seal a return to Barcelona, and with redemption at the Etihad unlikely, it is perhaps best for all parties that a permanent solution is found this summer.

City ‘set to sign’ Chelsea wonderkid

Manchester City have reportedly agreed to sign teenage midfielder Ryan McAidoo from Chelsea.

That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims the 2008-born player will join the Etihad this summer after City successfully fended off interest from other Premier League sides.

MEN Sport says: IF McAidoo is expected to sign for City this summer, which would be another coup for the club, which has a history of producing strong youth teams. Between 2020 and 2023, City won three consecutive Premier League 2 titles.

And while McAidoo would likely start his switch to the Under-18s first, it is undoubtedly good news for the long-term success of Manchester City’s academy.
