Rockets Not Ready to Maximize Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green

The Houston Rockets have some young talent on their roster that they’re trying to continue to develop into a true Western Conference contender, and Alperen Sengun and Jalen Green are the two players that stand out from the team. Both are eligible for max rookie extensions, like Cade Cunningham and Scottie Barnes, but unlikely to receive them Rockets.

“At this point, it’s unlikely that Sengun or Green will receive max rookie extensions — both are eligible for five-year deals worth up to $224.2 million, according to The Athletic’s salary cap expert Danny LeRoux,” The Athletic’s Kelly Iko said. “Houston has had conversations with both sides about an extension and will continue the dialogue this offseason, but the chances of either player signing a deal in the realm of other 2021 draft picks Cade Cunningham ($236 million) or Scottie Barnes (potentially up to $270 million) are slim. The Rockets are more likely to revisit this issue next year unless there’s a deal that benefits both sides.”

After signing Ime Udoka last year, the Rockets aimed to get into contention with their young roster while keeping open the possibility of acquiring a star player. They made a late-season attempt to qualify for the play-in tournament but fell short of the Golden State Warriors. Still, it was a step forward for the Rockets as a team that has proven it can win games against quality opponents, largely because of its strong defense.

Alperen Sengun played a big role in that success, averaging 21.1 points and 9.3 rebounds last season, according to Basketball Reference. At just 21 years old, Sengun is part of the Rockets’ long-term plan, whether that means building around him or using him in a trade to get a superstar.

Jalen Green is also a good young player. He averaged 19.6 points per game this season and grabbed 5.2 rebounds, according to Basketball Reference. While he could improve on his current efficiency, he still has time to improve at age 21. He has been the subject of trade rumors in the past.

Rockets salvage assets they’ve been storing for big trade

The Rockets are among the NBA teams that stand out and could make a big trade for a star player. They recently traded picks with the Brooklyn Nets to theoretically make a push for Kevin Durant if he becomes available.

Houston was rumored to have been interested in Mikal Bridges from the Nets but backed out and let the New York Knicks get him. Green has been mentioned as a potential player who could have joined Brookln in the past if this deal had happened. Ultimately, Mikal Bridges made it clear that he would have ended up signing with the Knicks regardless.

The Rockets are hoping to take a step forward and make the playoffs next season through internal growth in their core, but they’re also looking for a big star. It’s just a matter of who’s available and when.

Houston may need to buy time and possibly extend Sengun and Green next year.
