Joe Biden hit by shock poll in state he won by 11 points

A newly released poll shows President Joe Biden narrowly ahead of Donald Trump in New Mexico, a state the president won by 11 points in 2020.

The latest poll risks unsettling Democrats, who are already increasingly concerned about the president’s electoral chances after his weak showing in the June 27 debate.

Before the debate, from June 19 to 24, 1892 Polling surveyed 600 likely voters. And the results showed Biden was just one point ahead of Trump in a six-way race, including other candidates like independent Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

Biden narrowly leads Trump, 43% to 42% in this poll. In a two-way contest, the pollster gave Biden a lead of just two points, 49% to Trump’s 47%.

The internal poll, shared by poll aggregators including FiveThirtyEight, was conducted for New Mexico Republican Senate candidate Nella Domenici and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and has a possible variance of +/- 4 percent.

New Mexico used to be a fairly competitive state, but it has been voting blue since the 2008 presidential election. Biden won the state by nearly 11 points in 2020, receiving 54.28% of the vote, while Trump received 43.48%.

An earlier poll of 555 registered voters in New Mexico conducted by Public Policy Polling between June 13 and 14 gave Biden a 7-point lead over Trump.

The same pollster found in August 2023 that Biden had an 8-point lead over Trump, after surveying 767 registered voters.

All of these polls show a general downward trend in Biden’s popularity in New Mexico heading into the televised debate. Since the president’s shaky performance in the debate, his poll numbers have fallen across the board, and some Democrats have called for him to be replaced on the ticket.

This would be unprecedented in modern times and would also be highly unlikely, as it would only be possible if Biden himself chose to resign.

The president has made clear that he intends to continue in office, Biden campaign spokesman Seth Schuster previously said. Newsweek: “Joe Biden is not going to give up.”

Biden admitted his debate performance was poor, but said at a campaign rally Friday that he still believed “with all my heart and soul that I can do this job.”

“I don’t walk as easily as I used to. I don’t talk as easily as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to. But I know what I know: I know how to tell the truth. I know how to tell right from wrong. And I know how to do this job. I know how to get things done. And I know, as millions of Americans know, that when you fall down, you get back up,” Biden said.
