The Mavericks have signed Derrick Jones Jr. to a three-year, $27 contract.

The Dallas Mavericks offered Derrick Jones Jr. the same three-year, $27 million contract they ultimately agreed to with Naji Marshall, sources tell Marc Stein. Jones was looking for a bigger deal and agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers. Jones’ motivation for a more lucrative contract is believed to have been a bigger factor in his departure from the Mavericks than his decision to switch agents from Aaron Turner to Rich Paul.

Jones and the Clippers must wait until July 11 to finalize his contract because of the NBPA’s 15-day waiting period when a player changes agents.

The Mavericks quickly brought in Marshall to secure a commitment from a player they valued rather than endure the uncertainty of an offer sheet from the Clippers for Jones. Jones and the Clippers agreed to their contract shortly after Marshall finalized his with the Mavericks.

The Mavericks were also in pursuit of Klay Thompson with the promise of a spot in their starting lineup, which likely would have relegated Jones to a reserve role despite playing a key role in their Finals run.
