Sen. Klobuchar Announces Carbon Monoxide Safety Grant – ABC 6 News

Sen. Klobuchar announced a $200,000 grant to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety that will be used for carbon monoxide detectors.

(ABC 6 News) – Sen. Amy Klobuchar announced a $200,000 federal grant for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

The money will be used to install carbon monoxide detectors in homes and create a public safety awareness campaign.

The funding was authorized by the Nicholas and Zachary Burt Memorial Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act, which was signed into law in 2022. The bill is named for two young Minnesota boys who died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

In an interview with ABC 6 News, Senator Klobuchar stressed the importance of the grant. She said, “The funding alone is going to allow us to equip 2,500 families with carbon monoxide detectors and alerts in their own homes, and we know it works.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 400 Americans die each year from unintentional non-fire-related CO poisoning. Additionally, more than 100,000 people visit emergency rooms and more than 14,000 are hospitalized.
