78-year-old driver accused of killing family at San Francisco West Portal bus stop charged with vehicular manslaughter, prosecutor says

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — The driver accused of killing a family in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood in March has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said at a news conference Tuesday.

The March collision killed a family of four and the 78-year-old driver will face four counts of vehicular manslaughter.

The victims were identified as Diego Cardoso de Oliveira, 40, and Matilde Ramos Pinto, 38, their one-year-old son Joaquin Ramos Pinto de Oliveira and three-month-old Caue Ramos Pinto de Oliveira.

A SFMTA report says the driver was on the wrong side of the road and traveling at a high rate of speed at the time.

Prosecutor Brooke Jenkins said the initial investigation shows no indication the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or suffered from a medical condition.

The vehicle was also found to be fully functional.

“We have evidence that the vehicle was travelling at excessive speed, well in excess of the speed limit,” said prosecutor Brooke Jenkins. “This is not a case of someone travelling a few kilometres over the speed limit, but excessive speed and dangerous driving that could reasonably and foreseeably result in death.”

The driver is not currently in custody, but we’re told authorities are working with her lawyers.

The incident prompted proposals to change traffic patterns in the area, but these were shelved.
