Travellers to the EU should expect flight cancellations and delays on these dates in July

The European Union countries are among the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Every year, millions of people visit the EU, enjoying memorable experiences.

However, visiting the 27-country area sometimes has its drawbacks, including frequently cancelled or delayed flights.

In order to help our readers avoid any inconvenience when travelling in the EU, Schengen.News compiles a monthly list of countries that may be affected by flight disruptions. Here is the list for July 2024:

Italy: Several airports plan strike on July 5

On July 5, employees at several Italian airports are planning to go on strike. This decision will have consequences for air traffic, possibly leading to flight cancellations or delays, as reported by Euronews.

Travelers stopping at or heading to the following airports are most likely to be affected:

  • Bologna
  • Crotone
  • Lamezia Terme
  • Milan
  • Reggio Calabria
  • Rome
  • Venice

Ireland: Hundreds of flights cancelled until July 7

Until July 7, the airline Aer Lingus was forced to cancel up to 400 flights. The reason for these cancellations is the work-to-rule strike announced by the national airline’s pilots on June 26. This strike is likely to continue to impact flights, as pilots will not work outside their scheduled hours and will not accept schedule changes.

Airline workers demanding higher wages have even required the intervention of the country’s labor court, scheduled for July 3. Regardless of what changes may be made during that hearing, passengers are strongly encouraged to always stay informed.

The airline concerned will be:

France: Parisian public transport will be disrupted during the Olympic Games

Until September, when the Olympic Games end, France could face public transport problems.

The CGT-RATP union previously announced that strikes could take place in the French region of Ile-de-France concerning the bus and metro network at any time between February 5 and September 9.

The law coincides with the 2024 Olympics, which are scheduled to take place from July 26 to September 8 in Paris. The French Senate has passed a bill banning strikes in the transport sector during major events, such as the Olympics. The same bill requires workers to give months of advance notice of strikes. Public transport workers have been taking industrial action over wage disputes.

The most impacted transport and cities in France will be as follows:

  • Public transport, including buses and metros in Paris and the Ile-de-France region.

Netherlands: strikes in public transport on September 12

On September 12, public transport in several cities in the Netherlands is on hold after staff threatened to strike on that date.

The industrial action will follow the Cabinet’s budget proposal, which could include early retirement for people in physically demanding jobs.

The most affected will be:

  • Public transport in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam.

It is always advisable to know your rights regarding compensation.

EU Regulation 261/2004 establishes rights for passengers who are affected by flight cancellations, delays and other problems during their journey.

Any passenger has the right to claim compensation if they were not informed of the delay in advance.
