WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IS READY TO HAVE ITS OWN MOMENT OF EMERGENCE


According to USA Football, the number of girls ages 6 to 12 playing flag football has increased more than 200 percent since 2014, to more than 100,000.

“What we’ve seen at every level, from youth to the highest levels, is that girls and women want to play the game,” said Eric Mayes, USA Football’s managing director of national teams and high performance.

Next month, the NFL and ESPN will team up to broadcast a new NFL Championship in Canton, Ohio. It will feature more than 280 teams of players ages 9 to 18, much like football’s version of the Little League World Series. ESPN said it plans to air girls’ games as often as boys’ on its channels.
