Woman Who Won $43 Million Was Offered Steak Dinner By Casino In Lieu Of Her Winnings

A woman thought she had won a life-changing sum of money, but was instead offered a steak.

Katrina Bookman was visiting Resorts World Casino in Jamaica, New York when she decided to try her hand at the slots.

The odds aren’t great on slot machines; there’s only a 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 34 million chance of winning the jackpot using the maximum coin set, according to Investopedia.

But Katrina thought she was going to defy the odds when an eight-figure sum appeared on the screen for her.

At that point, Katrina said her whole body went “numb” thinking she had just won a life-changing sum of money – but her dreams were quickly dashed.

After informing a staff member of her huge win, Katrina returned to the casino the next day to receive the devastating news that she hadn’t won as much as she thought.

According to the New York State Gaming Commission, his slot machine had “malfunctioned” and only paid out $2.25. Ouch.

The machine had a warning that “malfunctions void all payouts and plays” and, as a result, the commission said it was required by law to give Bookman only what she had actually won.

But, as a gesture of goodwill, the casino offered Katrina a free steak dinner – a far cry from the millions of dollars she thought she had won.

She also received an apology. Resorts World spokesman Dan Bank told CNN at the time: “After being notified of the situation, casino staff were able to determine that the number displayed on the penny slot was the result of an obvious malfunction – a fact later confirmed by the New York State Gaming Commission.”

“After explaining the circumstances to Ms Bookman, we offered to pay her the exact amount shown on the printed ticket. Machine malfunctions are rare and we would like to apologise to Ms Bookman for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Katrina then filed a lawsuit against Resorts World Casino, Genting New York LLC and software provider IGT, insisting they paid her the millions of dollars she was told she had won.

Katrina’s lawyer added that the machine was malfunctioning and that they should at least pay his client the machine’s maximum jackpot, which is $6,500.

Much to her dismay, a judge ruled in favor of the casino and Katrina received no money.
