Positive reviews despite cancellation of Vernon Canada Day drone show

Mayla Janzen of the VOICE Society explained the reasons for the sudden cancellation

A drone show, planned to cap off a full day of Canada Day festivities in Vernon, was about to begin when disaster struck.

“Just as we were about to start, people on e-scooters drove past our security lines,” said Mayla Janzen, organizer of the Vernon Okanagan Inspired Community Events (VOICE) Society. “They crushed an antenna, which was needed for the show.”

Despite all efforts to repair the antenna, the damage was too severe and the show had to be cancelled.

“It was dark and there were bodies everywhere but unfortunately some people didn’t listen and obey security and crushed a fragile antenna.”

Janzen said the company was “devastated” and was looking for ways to work with the city again. However, despite some people’s dissatisfaction, the response throughout the day was “overwhelmingly positive.”

“A lot of people have thanked us for the work we’ve done in the community, and a lot of people have told us how much fun they had at the event despite the rain,” Janzen said. “I think overall we’re on the right track and we have the support of the community. Sometimes things just happen.”
